Twombly's Red Sentinel Japanese Maple
Acer palmatum 'Twombly's Red Sentinel'
In the late 1970’s, Ken Twombly of Twombly’s Nursery in CT, found a compact growth shaped mutation on a red bloodgood-type of a Japanese maple at a church in eastern Connecticut. When this broom-like mutation was propagated it had a very unusual form. The name of ‘Twombly’s Red Sentinel’ which Ken chose describes this Japanese maple perfectly. These grafted trees remain tall and upright, yet fairly narrow, making it a great mid-sized flag-pole-like tree of color for small spaces. ‘Twombly’s Red Sentinel’ leafs out in the early spring as a bright red, maturing to a deeper maroon by summer. In autumn, the electric red fall color will grab your attention in the landscape. It will reach 8-10 ft in height by 3 ft wide in 15 years. Because of this shape, Ken recommends using this maple as a high class hedge.
