Twenty years ago, Everett and Sandra Wray took a chance on a new kind of crop. Read the story and view pictures from over the years on our celebration website.
Tree
Hackberry
Celtis occidentalis
Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) is a medium-growing shade tree that matures near 45 feet tall and 35 feet wide. It tolerates tough climates and urban conditions and is hardy to USDA zone 3. Deep roots reduce the likelihood of lifting sidewalks compared with many shallow-rooted street trees. Corky, textured bark adds winter interest and stands up to mechanical damage. Fall foliage develops seasonal color as the canopy prepares for dormancy.
